After serving in the United States Army in Korea during the Vietnam era, Jake Montoya received an hornorable discharge in 1969. Upon receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Howard Payne University, Jake Montoya came to Lubbock, Texas to teach and serve as the certified athletic trainer on the coaching staff at one of the Lubbock area high schools. After earning a Master's Degree from Texas Tech University in 1977, Jake Montoya resigned from the Lubbock Independent School District and founded Jake Montoya Insurance in 1979.
